Information and where it comes from
You can sign in with Discord, with Google, or with an email address and password. Discord supplies your account identifier, display name, avatar and email when you sign in. If Discord does not provide an email address, MyMoviePoll creates a non-deliverable placeholder. MyMoviePoll does not request your Discord server list or permission to install a bot in this release.
Google supplies your account identifier, name, profile picture and verified email when you sign in with it. If you sign up with an email address, you choose a display name and password; the password is stored only as a one-way hash, and the address is used to confirm your account and to send password reset links you ask for. An account can hold more than one of these sign-in methods, and they are only joined automatically when both sides have verified the same email address.
Public profiles show only the display name and profile picture associated with an account. Email addresses, Discord and Google account identifiers, session information and other account-only details are not included in public profiles.
If you grant the Discord relationship permission when you sign in, Discord supplies your relationship list. This happens automatically on each sign-in while the permission is granted, and whenever you resync Discord yourself from your account settings. MyMoviePoll keeps only entries Discord marks as friends and matches their account IDs against existing accounts. Blocked accounts and pending Discord requests are not used. Only matched pairs of existing accounts are stored; unmatched Discord IDs, Discord names and the access token itself are not.
A match is only a suggestion. It never grants access to a profile or a library on its own; the people involved still have to become friends here.
You and other poll participants provide poll names, movie nominations and votes. New polls connect each participant to their signed-in account; polls created before 20 September 2026 may also contain guest display names and an anonymous participant identifier. People creating library entries may also provide a watched date, review, rating and labels for people they watched with. A label may optionally link to an account when that account’s profile visibility allows it. MyMoviePoll automatically receives technical information needed to operate and secure the service, including IP address, browser user agent and session information.
Library, watchlists and shared polls
Poll results are not saved automatically. A signed-in person may choose any result and add it to one of their own watchlists. A save does not mean the film was watched. It becomes watched history only when that person marks the movie watched.
When an active participant explicitly saves the single poll winner, that personal record may begin with editable text labels for the other active named participants and a link to the recap. These are a private snapshot, not attendance records: changing or removing one affects nobody else. Other poll results are saved like ordinary watchlist movies.
Account-linked watched-with tags remain private to the owner’s movie record. Public profiles may be tagged by any signed-in account, friends-only profiles only by accepted friends, and hidden profiles cannot be tagged. A later visibility change removes the visible account link where necessary without rewriting the owner’s text label or creating activity for the tagged account.
Watched activity, including review text, is shared only when the owner enables watched-activity sharing and their profile is visible to the viewer. Public watchlists expose only their name, tags, order and movies when the owner’s profile is also visible.
How information is used and the lawful bases
MyMoviePoll processes account, session, poll and history information where it is necessary to provide the service you ask for. This includes signing you in, running a poll, enforcing its settings and showing your dashboard and private history. The rules that apply when you use MyMoviePoll are set out in the legal and acceptable use page.
MyMoviePoll relies on legitimate interests for abuse prevention, service security, reliability, preserving shared poll results and the anonymous identities retained by older polls. Those interests are operating a safe service while limiting the identifiers collected and how long they remain linked to a guest. Information may also be processed where necessary to comply with a legal obligation. MyMoviePoll does not sell account or poll information.
Poll privacy
Polls, nominations and votes are stored in MySQL. Hosting a poll, successfully nominating a movie or submitting a vote creates a durable poll-history record. Signed-in users can see the result, their own nominations and the movies they voted for. Individual choices are not shown to other participants.
In older polls that allowed guests, unclaimed guest history is disconnected from the guest browser by a daily cleanup after its 30-day claim window has passed; shared poll nominations and results remain intact.
Retention
- Discord and Google account information, and your password hash, are kept until you delete your MyMoviePoll account. Email confirmation and password reset links expire after 60 minutes.
- Discord friend matches are kept for 30 days after the last successful confirmation, then deleted. Dismissed suggestions and Discord-sourced connections you decline, cancel or remove are suppressed for 30 days. Discord OAuth access and refresh tokens are not stored.
- Active login sessions normally expire after 120 minutes of inactivity. A persistent sign-in cookie can restore your login for up to 400 days; it is cleared when you sign out, clear this site’s cookies or delete your account.
- The participant identity cookie lasts up to 30 days. For older polls that allow guests, a one-way IP-address hash used for the per-poll participant limit lasts up to 24 hours. Access granted after entering a room PIN also lasts up to 24 hours.
- Incomplete poll rounds with no activity for 24 hours are abandoned. Abandoned polls that never completed are deleted after the 30-day guest-history window.
- Completed shared poll results remain until the host deletes the poll. Your personal connection remains until you remove the history entry, the host deletes the poll or you delete your account.
- Guest-provided names in older polls remain with their completed poll; owner-entered watched-with labels and any permitted account link remain with that owner’s movie until edited or deleted. Deleting the linked account leaves only the text label. After 30 days, an identifying guest fingerprint is rotated so the name can no longer be automatically claimed from that browser.
- Library entries are personally owned and are deleted with their owner. Deleting or editing one does not alter another person’s Library or poll history.
- Provider-managed backups and operational security logs follow their normal backup, security and troubleshooting rotation cycles before they are deleted or overwritten.
Cookies and similar technology
MyMoviePoll uses cookies that are necessary to keep sessions secure, protect forms, keep you signed in for up to 400 days, remember your poll participant identity and remember access to a PIN-protected room. Older polls may use that participant identity without an account. Signing out clears the persistent sign-in cookie. A further cookie, and a matching entry in your browser’s local storage, remember your display preference for up to a year. MyMoviePoll does not currently set analytics or advertising cookies.
MyMoviePoll uses YouTube API Services to provide its embedded trailer player. When a trailer showcase is opened, the player shares basic technical information with YouTube to render the player, determine playability and content restrictions, and prevent fraud and abuse. Additional information may be shared when a trailer is played, and YouTube may use cookies or similar technology under the Google Privacy Policy.
Service providers and international processing
MyMoviePoll relies on Discord and Google for sign-in, an email delivery provider for account emails, Laravel Cloud in its EU West (London) region for application hosting and managed MySQL account and poll data, Laravel Reverb for live updates, TMDB for movie metadata and YouTube for trailers. Those services process the information needed to provide their part of the application.
Discord, TMDB and Google/YouTube operate internationally, so information they receive may be processed outside the UK, including in the United States. Their own privacy notices provide more information about their processing and locations.
Your data protection rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may have the right to request access to or correction of your information, ask for deletion or restricted processing, receive portable data, and object to processing based on legitimate interests. These rights are not absolute and exceptions may apply.
MyMoviePoll does not make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that produce legal or similarly significant effects.
Age
MyMoviePoll is not intended for children under 13, and Discord and Google require their account holders to be at least 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided information through MyMoviePoll, contact privacy@mymoviepoll.com and it will be removed.
Deletion, questions and complaints
You can delete your account yourself from the dashboard. Your account is removed from the live service immediately, together with every live link between you and the polls you joined: the records left in those polls keep no reference to your account or to your browser. The polls themselves keep their nominations and results. Your personal library entries are deleted. Other participants keep their independent copies unchanged. This prevents one person leaving from rewriting everyone else’s movie night and cannot be undone through the live service.
You can also remove an individual completed poll from your own history, and a host deleting a poll removes its durable poll history for every participant.
For anything you cannot do from the dashboard — a question, a request to see or correct your information, an objection to processing based on legitimate interests, or a request from someone who took part in an older poll as a guest and has no account to sign in to — contact privacy@mymoviepoll.com. MyMoviePoll aims to respond within one month.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
