Lupin Part 4 Lands on Netflix: What to Know Before You Watch

Netflix releases all eight episodes of Lupin Part 4 on Friday 23 October, almost exactly three years after Part 3 arrived in October 2023. If you saw the earlier seasons at the time, you may be wondering how much you remember. If you never started, you may be wondering whether this is the moment. Here is what is confirmed, how long a catch-up takes and how to watch it with other people.

What is confirmed

Netflix's Tudum announcement says all eight episodes of the new season arrive on 23 October. What's on Netflix gives the release as global and the episodes as about 45 minutes each. Omar Sy returns as Assane Diop, alongside Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Soufiane Guerrab and Shirine Boutella, with Théo Christine and Laïka Blanc-Francard among the newcomers.

Netflix's synopsis says the story picks up four years after Part 3 and begins when a mysterious announcement signed "Lupin" warns of simultaneous museum heists. We have not seen the season, so this is a preview, not a review, and we have deliberately left out how earlier parts end.

How long is the catch-up?

The series, created by George Kay and François Uzan and inspired by Maurice Leblanc's gentleman thief, is in French. According to Wikipedia's episode list, the first three parts run like this:

  • Part 1 (January 2021): 5 episodes.
  • Part 2 (June 2021): 5 episodes.
  • Part 3 (October 2023): 7 episodes.

That is 17 episodes of roughly 41 to 53 minutes each, or around 13 hours. Part 4 adds about six more. Check Netflix in your country for current availability of the earlier parts, as we have not verified it for every market.

Who it suits and the tradeoffs

  • Fans of caper and heist stories: the premise is built around disguise, misdirection and a thief who is hard to pin down.
  • Newcomers: Netflix's own page offers recaps of Parts 1 to 3 and encourages a rewatch. The series has running mysteries and relationships, so starting at Part 4 is likely to be confusing. Starting at Part 1 is the safer plan.
  • Groups who dislike subtitles: it is a French-language show. Our guide to introducing a group to subtitled films covers how to make that easier.

Watching it with other people

An eight-episode drop invites a binge, but a group rarely has the same appetite. Agree in advance how many episodes make a night, and pick a stopping point. Three episodes of about 45 minutes fit comfortably into a long evening, which would finish the season over three sittings. If the group is split on whether to start, use our guide to building a shortlist people will vote on and let a quick vote decide.

For a returning series that half the room has seen and half has not, it is worth starting a poll with MyMoviePoll to find out who is in before you commit to a rewatch.
